Discovering the Hiking Trails of Samothrace
A Paradise for Nature Lovers
Samothrace, with its wild and pristine natural beauty, offers a unique experience for hiking and mountaineering enthusiasts. Mount Saos, also known as Fengari, is the island’s highest peak, standing at 1,611 meters. According to mythology, Poseidon watched the Trojan War unfold from this very spot. The summit of Fengari, with its commanding view extending to the Thracian coast, is an enticing destination for every hiker.
One of the most well-known and accessible routes to the summit is the trail from Therma to Fengari. This route is recommended for amateur hikers as it offers a balance between challenge and safety. The path winds through dense forests, crosses small waterfalls, and reveals breathtaking views, making it ideal for those who want to combine natural beauty with adventure.
However, for the more experienced and daring hikers, there are more difficult and demanding routes available. Vlad Totoianu, a guest at Pezoulia Cottages and an experienced mountaineer who recently ascended Fengari, sent the photos and shared his experience from the Prophet Elias to Fengari route. While he described the experience as magical, he also emphasized that this route is extremely difficult and is only suitable for those with the necessary experience and physical condition. The descent via the Xiropotamos valley proved to be long and challenging, more akin to rock climbing than hiking.
Despite the challenges, Samothrace offers unique moments of tranquility and connection with nature. The springs and streams of the area provide cool and pure water, while the archaeological sites and the sense of the presence of the "Ancients" add a mysterious and magical dimension to the experience. Travelers planning to spend the night outdoors will find safety near water sources, as the only animals roaming the area are goats, with no danger from other wild animals or snakes.
For most visitors, the Therma-Fengari route is the best option. The ascent is demanding, but it rewards hikers with stunning views from the summit and a unique sense of accomplishment. Whether you are an experienced mountaineer or an amateur hiker, Samothrace invites you to explore its secrets and discover the magic of nature in all its glory.
